Information Systems improve business quality significantly, here are some ways they do it. If you study the origin of Information systems, it was from operations research and mostly as a result of II world war and originated in the US, that is why this expertise was built in the US first and then spread to the rest of the world, imagine processing payroll for 10,000 people without a Payroll system, you cannot do it by hand or by paper or even by a small computer, you need that mainframe or a midrange computer that processes all the data that is input and spits out printed checks and payslips
i) - Help Handle High volume of everything right from finances to inventory to transactions - basically scaling
ii) - Historical Data - Historical data is easily preserved and archived
iii) - It is much easier to do the quarter end, year end accounting processes
iv) - Much easier to not only maintain system of records, but also share with other organizations that require, for example an ERP that has so many business aspects to it, it is much easier to get tax documents out of it, or produce financials based on the inventory position,
v) - Multinational companies cannot even survive because imagine reconciling the numbers or quarterly number of companies in different countries and publishing one corporate statement globally
vi) - If the Information systems are not perfectly maintained especially for public companies, they could get huge fines because of non-compliance with Sarbanes Oxley and other legal requirements
vii) - Many things won't work perfectly in our world, for example if you thought there is that favorite shirt that is available at the store and go to that store to buy one, you might be disappointed to find out that the inventory count was wrong and that shirt is not available there any more, similarly there may be surprises in the ATM, imagine what a pandemonium it could be if the inventory count at the grocery store was wrong, when people showed up there is not enough food to sell and all the shelves were empty
viiii) - I am sure there are plenty of research works that go on with these information systems as well, where such complicated research will not be possible without the ability to crush massive amount of data
So like this you can go on and on......
